Wind Power Generation Systems
For
Remote Homes, Ranches, Farms and Buildings in Texas & Louisiana
Alternative Power Solutions LLC (APS) designs, installs and
maintains small wind power (electricity generation) systems
that can be connected to the home or building and the electricity
distribution system. A wind power system is one of the most
cost-effective renewable energy systems. Depending on your
local wind activity, and the power consumption of your home
or facility, a small wind energy system can lower your electricity
bill by up to 90%.
APS also sells pre-packaged small wind power systems to the
technically savvy home owner and to new home builders that
can be installed by an electrician once trained by our staff.
Wind Power System Features
In wind
power systems, wind turbines covert the kinetic energy of wind
into mechanical power that runs a turbine to produce clean,
non-polluting electricity. The blades of the turbine are aerodynamically
designed to capture the maximum energy of the wind and have
mechanisms to prevent out-of-control spinning in very high
winds. A battery backup system can be installed for homes or
facilities that do not have access to traditional utility supplied
electricity, or connected to the local utility for the supply
of power during periods of low wind.
Grid-connected
Wind Power Systems
Those wind power systems which are
connected to the electrical distribution system are called
grid-connected. A grid-connected wind turbine can reduce consumption
of utility-supplied electricity for lighting, appliances, and
electric air conditioning and heating. If the turbine cannot
deliver the amount of energy needed, the utility will make
up the difference. When the wind system produces more electricity
than the household requires, the excess can be sold to the
utility via net metering.
Sell Your Excess Wind Power
Some
utility companies have net metering programs, which further
enhance the economics of wind power. Net metering means that
when a wind power system generates more electricity than needed,
the excess goes to the utility grid and the meter spins backwards.
This excess power can then be sold to the utility or traded
for future credit on your utility bill.
Locations for Wind Power Generation Systems
Wind power systems are practical in the following locations:
- An area with average annual wind speed of at least 10 miles
per hour (4.5 m/s).
- An area where utility-supplied electricity is expensive
(about 10–15 cents per kilowatt-hour).
- Remote homes, cabins, camps, or businesses
- Ranch or farm power for water pumping or other remote uses
Cost of a Wind Power System
Wind
power systems typically cost from $15,000 to $50,000 installed.
Cost variables that are considered generally include:
- Amount of wind generated power required (turbine size)
- The selected system manufacturer
- If battery back-up is required
- System distance from house or power consumer
APS offers long term maintenance service contracts on wind
power systems that we install or on existing systems to ensure
continual performance beyond standard warranties
